The Proposal
  Message in a bottle
The Gondola I guess I'll start at the beginning...
I had been helping Troy with a project, I wasn't the slightest bit thrilled about it and I didn't hesitate to let him know how I felt. He said that he really needed and appreciated my help and if I would do it he'd have a surprise for me on Friday (which is unusual for him, he's not really all that creative, analytical definitely, creative - nope!). Well, I have to admit that was really all the incentive I needed to continue. I helped him and we finished.

Then came Friday! August 13, 1999!!
I was really excited all day at work knowing that when I got home he'd have a surprise. So I eagerly waited for him to arrive, when he did I asked what's the surprise. He then said "Ummm, what surprise." I wasn't at all happy with that response. Then he said that he needed to pick up groceries at the market and other misc. items. I was VERY disappointed but decided what the heck I'll pout and fume in the car. So I threw on some jeans and a baggy sweatshirt and I had absolutely NOOOOOO make-up on. We went and did some stuff and he mentioned that he'd like to eat dinner at Newport Beach. Well, we had been going down to the beach for the past few weeks to go on little harbor cruises. No big deal, but just something to do on our date night (which is every Friday). So I agreed, what the heck I loooove to eat!

The dinner
He decided to take me to this small Italian place overlooking the water. It's a quaint, casual and romantic place. By this time I was over my disappointment because by now I was starving and pasta sounded perfect! We sat down, ordered a glass of wine and dinner. I was thoroughly enjoying my meal and the company when this strange man came by our table and called out for Troy. Asking over and over if there was somebody by the name of Troy there. I was SHOCKED... Troy isn't a common name and MY Troy responded to the man!!! The man told Troy that when we were through with dinner to go around the corner and meet him there. I wolfed down dinner!!

The surprise
As we walked around the corner and met the man, he pointed at the water. There in the water sat this beautiful Gondola. It had a red canopy, which if one wanted could close the curtains for complete privacy. As I went to get into the Gondola, there was fruit, cheese, chocolates and a bottle of wine on a table. Across from the table was a blanket and a single red rose on the blanket. I was in complete awe! I looked at Troy and said this was the best surprise anyone could give me. Troy smiled and teased me about how could I think he would forget about my surprise.

The bottle
The night was clear. The water was calm. The air was warm. As I was snuggling in Troy's arms I was completely captivated in the wonder of the night. We were talking, laughing and having a GREAT time, when all of a sudden the Gondolier, he called himself Guido, asked me if I could please do him a favor. (Now, because of the Canopy I could not see him, only hear him, and up to that point he had been singing) I wondered what it could be. He said that there was some litter in the water and everyone tried really hard to keep the Newport Harbor clean, and if I would be so kind as to reach in and pull it into the Gondola. I was bewildered to say the least, but oh well, it was only a bottle. So I grabbed the bottle and to my SURPRISE there was a note (scroll) stuck in the top and covered with cellophane.

After the proposal
The proposal
As I removed the cellophane and opened the scroll I saw that it was for me. It was a poem Troy had written that ended with "Will you marry me?" I was floored. I could not get over the fact there was a bottle floating in the water and it was for me. Some random bottle was for me. How many bottles floating in the water are actually addressed to people. Not many, I was floored. I looked at him, very emotionally and nodded yes, then said yes and then he gave me my ring. I cannot convey to you how I felt at that moment. Words cannot describe. The ring he gave was a temporary, he said that we would go and pick out the ring that I wanted. I was overjoyed. The Gondolier then headed back to the docks.

At the docks
As we arrived back at the docks, the Gondolier and the other strange man, that wasn't strange anymore, told me they were very happy for us and took a picture of us in the Gondola. At this time I realized, OHHHH MYYY GOOOSSSSHHH! I look horrible, I have NO make-up on, an 'ole baggy sweatshirt and ratty jeans. I'm serious, I looked hideous. But he snapped the picture anyhow. I'm debating whether to add it or not, it really is bad!!! Anyhow, he said for us to go into the office where they could take another one and put it on their wall. I begged them to let me put on some make-up but they insisted that I looked fine and snapped that camera again. Yes, as I speak that picture is on their wall and it doesn't look very good.

The end!!! (Or should I say... The beginning?)
